Tonnes of waste set alight on commercial premises in Widnes

LARGE amounts of waste set alight causing a blaze on a commercial premises in Widnes last night, Friday.

Six fire engines attended the scene on Pickerings Road to tackle the flames.

An estimated 100 tonnes of refuse caught fire and three branch holders, along with special equipment was used to tame the blaze.

Cordons were set up around the premises and on-site machinery was used to move scrap piles to enable firefighters to cool it down.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Fire said: "A large amount of refuse, some 100 tonnes, was on fire at a commercial premises on Pickerings Road.

"Three branch holders were used to tackle the blaze, along with specialist equipment.

"Cordons were set up and on-site machinery was used to move scrap piles to enable firefighters to cool it down. Once the fire was extinguished, damping down continued throughout the night."
